About SSSSPOTY 2022

The Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition - affectionately known as SSSSPOTY! - returns for its 14th year... this time at the Sondheim Theatre.

To honour Mr Sondheim's wish to encourage up and coming young performers, the competition invites students of musical theatre and drama to sing a Sondheim number - plus a piece of new writing for the stage - in front of a panel of respected judges, chaired by broadcaster and music critic Edward Seckerson. Each year, hundreds of students are whittled down to 12 finalists, and the winning performer takes home a cheque for £1,000.

This year's event will be particularly poignant, as it's the first to be staged since the passing of the legendary Broadway composer-lyricist. The Sondheim Society is honoured to be able to continue its patron's legacy, and thrilled to be hosting the event at theatre that now bears his name.

Supporting the student performers in their attempt to be crowned Performer of the Year will be Musical Director Nigel Lilley (Follies, National Theatre, Olivier nominee for Outstanding Achievement in Music; Fun Home, Young Vic; Company, Crucible Sheffield) and Director Hannah Chissick (Side by Side by Sondheim,West End;Marry Me a Little,The Other Palace).

Mr Sondheim insisted that the competition also features the opportunity to showcase new work written for the stage, so the finalists will also be asked to sing a number selected from the song catalogue at New UK Musicals - an innovative resource for writers of musical theatre.

Previous finalists at this prestigious competition include Cynthia Erivo (2009), Michael Peavoy (winner, 2009), Alex Young (winner, 2010), Taron Egerton (winner, 2011),Turlough Convery (winner, 2013), Erin Doherty (winner, 2015), Courtney Bowman (winner, 2016), Jamie Bogyo (2019) and Stuart Thompson (winner, 2019).

Hosts have included Julian Ovenden, Hannah Waddingham, Jenna Russell, Sally Ann Triplett, Maria Friedman, Joanna Riding, Michael Xavier and Tracie Bennett, with guest judges including Imelda Staunton, Peter Polycarpou, Janie Dee, Anne Reid, Elaine Paige, Jamie Lloyd, Michael Grandage and Kerry Ellis. Julia McKenzie, a founding patron of the Sondheim Society, is also on hand each year to award the prizes.

So, don't miss a wonderful evening celebrating the songs of Stephen Sondheim and supporting the country's best young musical-theatre talent. It's your chance to see the West End stars of tomorrow and to say, "I saw them here first!"
